“The Dawning of a New Era”

Due to structural deficiencies, the sanctuary of Sloan UMC was deemed to be unsafe for continued habitation. Though the physical structure was demolished, the vision, mission, and ministries of Sloan UMC continue to thrive. The congregation is in the midst of a three-year Capital Campaign to build a multi-purpose worship center at its same site in the heart of 5th Ward, Texas, its original mission field.

TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

IT IS WITH GRATITUDE, HUMILITY, AND COMPLETE SUBMISSION TO THE WILL OF ALMIGHTY GOD, THAT THE SLOAN MEMORIAL UMC FAMILY REFLECTS UPON THE JOURNEY TAKEN OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS:
  • With the physical structure of Sloan UMC at 3102 Nance Street deemed unsafe for occupancy, worship services began being held in the sanctuary of Wesley UMC in September, 2012.
  • Historical artifacts, church records, furnishings, and equipment were packed and secured in temperature-controlled “inside” storage facilities.
  • Bids were submitted, contracts were entered into, and payments were made for asbestos removal and complete demolition of Sloan UMC facilities at 3102 Nance Street.
  • Sloan’s HELPING HANDS CENTER has become the hub for Sunday School, Bible Study/Life Sessions, Work Area/Business Meetings, and Ministry efforts for Sloan UMC.
  • Partnerships for Ministry were established and implemented with Mt. Vernon UMC, Wesley UMC, Payne Chapel AME, Star of Hope Women’s and Children’s Shelter, Bruce Elementary School, Houston Food Bank, the Houston Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and Orchard Park Assisted Living Center in Manvel, Texas.
  • A series of churchwide meetings and prayer sessions were held encompassing a S.W.O.T. (Strengths, /Weaknesses/ Opportunities/Threats) Analysis and culminating with the formulation of Sloan UMC’s “MINISTRY PLAN” that, in turn, became the blueprint for facility needs for new construction.
  • Churchwide input was gathered by architect for facility needs.
  • “Capital Campaign” was launched in May, 2013.
  • “Tree of Life” launched to supplement Capital Campaign efforts. Leaves engraved and placed on Tree of Life – in honor, in memory, in congratulations –($500 per leaf).
  • Embraced the Finance Committee’s “A” TEAM STEWARDSHIP PLAN for meeting our budget’s commitments towards APPORTIONMENTS and FAIR SHARE GOALS.
  • Congregation continues to fulfill its commitment at the 100% level.
  • Team from Sloan UMC participated in BMCR’s “ACTIVATE” to embrace strategies to empower Sloan UMC toward vitality and sustainability.
  • Even without a “physical structure in the name of Sloan UMC”, the “body of Christ in Sloan UMC” has been blest with new members, new ministry ventures, and networking opportunities that would not have been embraced except as a part of this present journey.
  • At present, all of Sloan’s properties have been surveyed. Preparations must be made for meeting with the District’s Building Committee. An architectural rendering of proposed facility, based upon survey results and input received from congregation, is forthcoming. Stewardship emphasis continues for prayerful fulfillment of individual and family commitments to our ongoing Capital Campaign efforts.
